Certifications in Natural Cosmetics – Key Facts
+
In the natural cosmetics market, greenwashing is common – many producers use terms like “bio,” “eco,” or “natural” without real justification. That’s why it’s important to recognize the certifications that genuinely confirm composition and production standards.
Key Certifications in Europe
COSMOS (Natural / Organic) – currently the most recognized standard in the EU. The “Organic” label requires at least 95% organically sourced agricultural ingredients.
Ecocert – minimum 95% natural ingredients and 20% organic content in the final product; bans parabens, silicones, and GMOs.
NaTrue – three certification levels: natural, natural with organic components, and organic.
BDIH (Germany) – prohibits synthetic raw materials; ingredients must come from controlled cultivation.
Soil Association (UK) – highly restrictive; requires 95% organic agricultural ingredients.
ICEA (Italy) – certifies natural, organic, and vegan products; also audits packaging and production processes.
Other Important Labels
Vegan / V-Label – no animal-derived ingredients.
Cruelty Free / Leaping Bunny – no animal testing.
FSC / PEFC – packaging sourced from responsibly managed forests.
